The music video for “You can’t sit with us” is full of references to the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s. Here’s a list of 11 details you might have missed!

1. Mean Girls

Alright, this one is pretty obvious just from the title alone but it still deserves a spot! The song’s title is a reference to the 2004 movie Mean Girls. Gretchen Wieners has a legendary line where she yells at high school queen Regina George: “You can’t sit with us!”

Sunmi repeats the line more than a few times in the chorus, and it’s sure to get stuck in your head!

2. D.E.B.S

D.E.B.S was a 2004 film full of spy action, iconic fashion looks, and a lesbian enemies-to-lovers story. The movie stars college-age women who are recruited into espionage.

3. Charlie’s Angels

Charlie’s Angels was a crime drama TV series that aired from 1976–1981 featuring, you guessed it, a crime-fighting trio. The women were always dressed to impressed even while completing demanding missions.

Sunmi’s trio totally matches that powerful, beautiful image!

4. Warm Bodies

Nothing like a little zombie romance in the middle of a pop banger! Sunmi rejects a man in the beginning of the music video, only to (spoiler alert) accept his proposal at the end of the MV — even after he’s become a zombie!

It reminded some fans of the 2013 zombie rom-com Warm Bodies that flipped the zombie genre on its head.

5. From Dusk Till Dawn

The video rental store Sunmi and her crew go to in the music video is named “From Dusk Till Dawn!”

6. Blockbuster

Knowing what Blockbuster is is a sure sign that someone grew up in the 90s or 00s! Blockbuster is a movie and video game rental company that had everyone visiting its stores back in the day.

Though Sunmi doesn’t reference Blockbuster by name, the store she goes to definitely brings it to mind!

7. 2 Fast 2 Furious

Fans also saw a connection between the music video and the 2003 film 2 Fast 2 Furious!

The part where Sunmi delivers a killer rap verse in front of a car reminded fans of the movie, particularly Devon Aoki‘s unforgettable role.

8. Say Anything…

Say Anything… was a 1989 teen romance-comedy that created one of the most easily recognized scenes in American film history! The character Lloyd holds up a boombox outside of Diane’s house, to let her know he hasn’t given up on her.

The part where Sunmi’s love interest attempts to win her back by standing outside of her window and holding up a sign reminded fans of that scene!

9. The fashion

Sunmi pulls off a ton of looks in this music video, like the school uniform outfit that screams “Hit Me Baby (One More Time)” by Britney Spears.

She also rocks this full denim ensemble in what may be another Britney reference, but either way is undoubtedly so retro!

10. The tech

Nothing dates film and TV quite like technology does, and Sunmi’s MV totally nailed it. The singer uses the iMac G3 desktop released in 1998!

Sunmi also uses a landline, which tons of people don’t even have in their homes anymore.
