A Cup Sleeve Event In Honor Of English Actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s Birthday Goes Viral

We stan Benedict oppa!

An unexpected cup sleeve event has gone viral.

Cup sleeve events at cafés have become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially among international K-Pop fans. For many, it’s a fun activity and allows showing support to one’s favorite idol for special occasions, such as birthdays.

Yet, we would not normally expect the same events for Western celebrities.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Nevertheless, fans of award-winning English actor Benedict Cumberbatch recently held a cup sleeve event for him in Seoul. It was in honor of his birthday, which is July 19.

Benedict Cumberbatch is best known for the BBC series Sherlock in which he portrayed the titular character and his portrayal of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, he has appeared in many independent projects and Oscar-winning films The Imitation Game, 12 Years A Slave, and The Hobbit.

While it seems unexpectant for there to be a birthday café event hosted in Korea for a non-Korean celebrity, Benedict Cumberbatch is beloved internationally.

Throughout the years of doing his press tours in Korea, he has attempted to be respectful and appreciative of the culture. From learning finger hearts to eating the food…

Additionally, in a recent online press conference for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he expressed a desire to act in a Korean film.

I’ve been a big fan of Korean cinema before and now… As far as being in a Korean film, why not? You have some of the most fantastic filmmakers in the world. I wish it happens.

He especially has been very appreciative of his Korean fans. So, naturally, they would want to return the love!

Korean fans are passionate, artistic, kind, loyal, and very precious. I would just like to say we really appreciate them!

Still, people were shocked to see that a cup sleeve event in Seoul was being held for Benedict Cumberbatch’s birthday. A post on Twitter went viral with 117.5K likes at the time of writing.

Additional netizen posts have gone moderately viral too.

Many are in awe of the great event.

The event titled “Happy Benny Day” or “Happy Ben’s Day” was held from July 17 to 19 at Palette cafe.

It included displays featuring his famous characters, such as Sherlock, Doctor Strange, and Khan (Star Trek Into Darkness), etc.

And, like any birthday event, it did indeed include cup sleeves!

And, is it really a café event for your favorite celebrity without freebies and photocards? Of course not!

If you’re a Cumberbabe or Cumbercookie (Benedict Cumberbatch fans) and wish you could have attended, some have shared several pictures you can live vicariously through.

The organizers really thought of everything, and it turned out to be a truly memorable event that would make Benedict Cumberbatch surely proud of his fans!

This wouldn’t be the first time a cup sleeve event was hosted for a non-K-Pop idol. Last year, a birthday cup sleeve event was held for BTS founder and HYBE chairman Bang Si Hyuk (also known as Bang PD and Hitman Bang). Read more below.
