Here’s The Actual Meaning Behind BTS J-Hope’s “= (Equal Sign)” Lyrics

He explained the true meaning of the song.

Just like his song “P.O.P (Piece Of Peace) pt.1” from his 2018 mixtape Hope World, BTS‘s J-Hope has released another song that can give strength to anyone. When explaining the meaning behind the song “= (Equal Sign),” J-Hope explains his humble point of view that there’s no one above or below him.

All people come from different backgrounds, but in the end, our differences are not as big as they may seem.

J-Hope’s message behind the song is shown through his language choice in the lyrics.

As you know, I’m not that good in English. But the reason why I sing in English is because even if I’m a Korean, I can still sing in English.

— J-Hope

Similarly, even if Korean is not your first language, you can still sing and use the language if it makes you happy.

And even if you aren’t good in Korean, someone who is good in English can sing in Korean.

— J-Hope

You don’t have to be perfect at a language in order to enjoy it or use it. People from countries who speak different languages shouldn’t be afraid to use a new language.

J-Hope’s desire to help people extends beyond the song. Stating “Regardless of age, regardless of nationality” in the lyrics, he often helps both children and those from other countries. Throughout the years, he has donated over ₩800 million KRW (about $672,000 USD) to support children, both in Korea and overseas.

From helping disabled children to providing scholarships for the youth, he is always doing what he can to assist others who are struggling. Making ARMY proud every day, J-Hope takes his position as a role model seriously and is aware of the impact he has on the world.
