Kim Jong Un Declares His Wishes For A Peace Treaty With Donald Trump

There’s talk that Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump will be meeting to settle the nuclear tension once and for all with a peace treaty.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to introduce the idea of signing a peace treaty with U.S. President Donald Trump during their upcoming meeting. President Trump announced their upcoming meeting, after months of tension between the two countries.

North Korea is hoping the meeting will lead to a peace accord that will both protect Pyongyang’s sovereignty and end a ceasefire with Washington. The ceasefire has lasted more than 60 years.

The White House also had released a statement that they would not meet with Kim Jong Un until they were sure that he kept a promise to denuclearize.

“They made some major promises. They have made promises to denuclearize. They have made promises to stop nuclear and missile testing. We’re not going to have this meeting take place until we see concrete actions that match the words and the rhetoric of North Korea.”

— Sarah Sanders, White House Press Secretary

However, Koh Yu Hwan, who teaches North Korean studies at South Korea’s Dongguk University, stated that the same promises of a meeting and peace treaties had happened before but never pulled through.

“There were agreements between the U.S. and North Korea to open up discussion on a peace treaty, but they never materialized. The U.S. wants a peace treaty at the end of the denuclearization process, while for the North, it’s the precondition for its denuclearization.”

According to Koh Yu Hwan, this peace treaty would force a discussion about the US military’s involvement in South Korea. US forces have conducted, and continue to conduct, military exercises with the South Korean military. These exercises have increased tensions between the two countries, as Kim Jong Un’s regime sees the exercises as preparations for an invasion.

South Korean President Moon Jae In thanked both President Trump and Kim Jong Un for showing signs of peace and promised to make preparations for the historic meeting that is expected to happen in May.

“This is an almost miraculous event; my administration will prepare for the May meeting with utmost diligence.”
