For those who haven’t watched Squid Game yet, here’s a quick recap. 456 people in desperate need of cash compete to win it in a series of deadly childhood games.

Squid Game has been compared to other flicks in the death game genre, including the Battle Royale films and Netflix‘s Alice in Borderland series. Some cinephiles, however, have also found similarities to Luck.

Luck is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language film loosely based on the 2001 Spanish thriller Intacto. It follows a rich mafia boss named Musa Bhai, who is extraordinarily lucky. From infancy to adulthood he survived a slew of disasters.

Musa Bhai and a banker, Ram Mehra, team up to create a deadly game that gambles with lives. Each of the players they recruit is uncannily lucky (one survived a hail of bullets). They all need cash, and they all have their own reasons for playing.

Like in Squid Game, the players are numbered…

…blindfolded, and transported to a secret location where they play for their lives, while being monitored.

A game employee escorts a player.

Both Squid Game and Luck players are offered a cash prize if they survive, but there’s one key difference. The high-stakes games in Squid Game are about skill, while many of those in Luck are games of chance.

Players playing a game of Russian roulette.

Like Squid GameLuck has games within games. The players trick and betray each other, and eventually, all hell breaks loose.
